A New Semester

In just two days, my seventh semester at Handong University will begin. It seems like only yesterday that I was starting out here, a "newbie" with only a minimal understanding of my university, the Korean language, or the local culture. I also had no idea that I would meet my life partner later that year!

Throughout this experience, God has been there every step of the way. I really feel He has helped me to mature both personally and professionally during my time here. More than ever before, I've learned to trust Him with all of the stuff I face within and without. Also, I've noticed him stretch me through new challenges I didn't anticipate. Korea is not a field I would have chosen on my own, but it is the place God chose to mold me into a more Christlike individual.

I've also witnessed God mature me at the work place. Here, I am a full-time EFL professor. In that role, I've grown in my teaching ability re: reading, writing, pronunciation, grammar, and critical thinking classes. I knew some things coming in (due to my Wheaton degree and prior experience), but have learned quite a bit more due to the classroom experiences I've had in Korea.

I've also learned to have a greater appreciation for those in administration while serving here. I came to this university intending only to teach, but God has given me additional responsibilities in the areas of curriculum and scheduling along the way. Right now, I have three prospective courses in mind for the university. Though I've worked a great deal on one of them (Theological English), two of the others are just concepts right now. Please pray I'll persevere in following through on developing and presenting these courses to appropriate personnel over the coming months.

This semester, I plan to teach three familiar courses: English Pronunciation Clinic, English Grammar & Composition, and English Reading & Discussion. I'm hoping familiarity will result in a semester that's less stressed than the previous one. However, I don't want to rest on my laurels and grow complacent. Please pray I'll learn from previous feedback and teach more effectively than ever before in 2008.

Hey Brother. It was good to talk with you today and to read what you posted on your blog. I rejoice with you in all that God has done in your life and will continue to pray for you as you walk with him in the coming days.

Thanks for stopping by our family blog. Did you see the photos of our "friend" Mike?
