Baptist Student Center

The Baptist Student Center, also known as the BSC English Language Center, was started by Baptist missionaries some 50 years ago. Foreign teachers, mostly from the United States, teach primarily English conversation classes there to Thai students. I have many positive memories from my time as a teacher at the BSC, and these include various friends you'll find in other parts of this blog. Some others involve Jack and Gladys Martin, for whom the housing facility below was name after (Gana and I stayed in this building during our final days in Bangkok). Gladys Martin was my supervisor from May '97-August '98, and she and her husband Jack were great mentors to work with.

One of my Thai colleagues at the BSC was Tuk, standing on the right in the picture below. Somjuk, the other worker in this photo, was one of my English Bible students at New Vision Church (which meets in the BSC building). God bless you friends!

Iris, who grew up in Malaysia, always gave encouragement to foreign teachers at the BSC.

Ba-Yuang frequently cooked for the teaching staff. Nowadays, she takes things somewhat easier by selling beverages at the BSC.

Lung Kaew, the head of the janitorial staff, sought to learn simple English expressions (i.e. "you look good!") while I served in Thailand. It's great to see him still active these days.
