Rediscovering U2

"Only love, only love can leave such a mark.
But only love, only love can heal such a scar.
Justified till we die, you and I will magnify
The Magnificent."
- from "Magnificent"

I've been rediscovering the music of U2. This process began in March, as that is when they released their latest: No Line on the Horizon. Since that time, I've also picked up their previous release from '04 and reacquainted myself with other U2 works as well.

Back in '87, I first picked up their CD The Joshua Tree. Even though you still can't find in Christian music stores, various Christian artists (and Christianity Today magazine) still rank it among the best CDs of all time. It definitely is a classic, and a recording that I'll likely never tire of.

You may ask, "What's so special about U2?" To put it simply, no other band depicts the adventure called life as U2 does. Nowhere else in the "secular" music field can you find such expressions of joy and beauty as you can through U2's music. Plus, you can't find "Christian" CDs that dare to tackle some of the issues this band raises in their lyrics.

I'll agree that some of U2's antics over the years have been questionable. I certainly don't endorse everything they've said or done. However, I've found that, as is the case with many other artists, focusing on the music itself makes life a much richer experience.
