Thoughts on Voting
Back in the late '90s, I discussed politics a bit with some veteran overseas workers. Though they were disturbed at the political scene back then, none had any intention of voting in the foreseeable future. I couldn't believe this! Hadn't my mom taught me that I had no right to complain if I didn't vote? Yet, at least two of these gentlemen told me they hadn't voted in at least twenty(!) years.
This past weekend, I had lunch with some other friends here. Both of them were also bothered by recent political events. Since they had some strong opinions, I assumed both had checked to see if they were registered during their summer trips to the US. However, neither was sure of his current registration status, as it had also been many years for them since they'd last voted.
This got me to thinking "Is it a sin to not vote?" Voting as we understand it is a relatively recent innovation, so Scripture does not take a clear position on this issue. However, shouldn't every free Christian who can vote exercise his/her right to do so? Remember, many of our brothers and sisters in Christ in Myanmar, Vietnam, Cuba, and many other lands can't imagine what it's like to live in an open, democratic society. Shouldn't we show our gratitude to God by exercising a right that so many have never experienced?
